Simplifies everyday life and gives you back control over your own data: The EUDI Wallet for all European citizens.

Together with project partners and experts, SPRIND is designing a secure ecosystem for digital credentials.

EUDI Wallet

The EUDI Wallet provides a secure way to digitally store, manage, and present everything that is currently carried as a card or physical document. From ID cards and driving licenses to university certificates, prescriptions from the doctor, or gym membership cards – the EUDI Wallet makes everyday life easier and creates trust in the digital space.

The EUDI Wallet not only simplifies processes, but also creates new efficiency, space for innovation and new markets as well as more protection against counterfeiting and fraud for citizens, companies, and the administration.

EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL – WITH THE EUDI WALLET

We do a lot with our smartphones – from everyday communication to banking – but the most important thing, our identity, is often left out. This is where the EUDI Wallet comes in and fundamentally simplifies citizens’ everyday lives. No more overstuffed wallets and endless files: Instead, all important documents, from driving licenses to insurance documents, are stored digitally and securely in the EUDI Wallet.

NEW PERSPECTIVES FOR USERS, BUSINESSES AND ADMINISTRATION

Users, businesses, and the government are struggling with cumbersome and paper-based processes, while outdated structures prevent urgently needed efficiency gains. The EUDI Wallet is the solution. It is not just an app, but the core of a new, trustworthy digital infrastructure. Supported by the amended eIDAS regulation, which addresses the dynamic needs of the European population, the EUDI Wallet revolutionizes how digital identities are handled. This European requirement opens up the opportunity for Member States to develop secure identification solutions that overcome digital borders and enable citizens, businesses, and public administrations to live in a world where trust and efficiency are united.

Eudi Wallet in everyday life

The EUDI Wallet enables secure, particularly data protection-friendly, uncomplicated, and convenient identification. ID card data can be transferred independently to the smartphone once and is then securely stored in the wallet. This information is then available for use online or on site at any time – for example when opening a bank account, when going to the authorities digitally, or for age verification at the kiosk. The EUDI Wallet therefore offers simple and trustworthy identification in every situation.

Whether it’s a driver’s license, insurance card, or a university transcript of records – government and private documents can be securely stored in the EUDI Wallet in future. This eliminates the need to scan certificates for job applications or take a photo of your driver’s license for the car-sharing app. The EUDI Wallet not only allows you to receive digital credentials, but also to send them to what are referred to as relying parties, such as your future employer, a public authority, or the pharmacy around the corner. The digital credentials include digital signatures that verify their authenticity. This effectively prevents counterfeiting and misuse.

Digitally signing documents has never been easier than with the EUDI Wallet. The qualified electronic signature gives digital interactions legal validity and maximum security. The digital signature is even free of charge for private individuals (natural persons). These digital signatures are just as valid as handwritten ones and enable both citizens and companies to benefit from accelerated processes and increased efficiency and security in digital communication.

Thanks to the EUDI Wallet, it is possible to log in to online services securely and without disclosing your name, email address, or other personal data. Instead, a pseudonymous login can be used: a unique but untraceable indicator that allows access without revealing your identity. This means that the person remains recognizable for the service – for example, to find saved content or orders – and retains control over when and whether their real identity is shared. This not only makes digital logging in more convenient, but also more private and supports digital self-determination.

Whether for online shopping, app subscriptions, or paying administration fees – the EUDI Wallet allows you to authorize payments securely and with minimal data. Users always have an overview of who wants to debit how much and can decide for themselves whether they want to approve the charge.

Imagine an everyday life in which opening a bank account or submitting an electronic prescription is as easy as sending a message. The EUDI Wallet makes this possible by combining all the essential digital credentials in one place. It gives citizens back control over their digital identity and at the same time provides them with the flexibility to identify themselves securely – be it when registering a SIM card or using eGovernment services. Welcome to the future of digital identity, where the smartphone becomes the key to trust and efficiency.

Advantages for companies:
Innovation driver EUDI Wallet

The EUDI Wallet project will create the technological, legal, and future basis on which companies can not only make their digital business processes more efficient, but also develop completely new, differentiated business models and scale them in new markets. The integration of EUDI Wallets plays a central role here: They revolutionize the management of identity and verification data by making it machine-readable, tamper-proof, and cost-effective. As a result, companies benefit from significantly lower abandonment rates in digital processes, lower costs, and greater security – and at the same time provide new impetus for innovative, forward-looking product ideas. Put an end to insecure and inefficient processes such as scanned PDF documents – the future of digital verification begins now.

The EUDI Wallet standardizes identification and verification processes throughout the EU – from ID cards to certificates, from opening an account to buying a car. This also makes processes simpler, cheaper, and faster. And above all: they become a driver for new ideas. Companies can build on this to rethink their business models: broader, more differentiated, internationally compatible. This will make the Wallet a driving force for efficiency, trust, and sustainable innovation throughout Europe.

Changing your place of residence, registering a business, or applying for a driver’s license – all this can soon be done easily and securely from home with just a few clicks. Without long waiting times at the citizens’ office, without paperwork, without filling out forms by hand. What may seem unimaginable today will become part of everyday life with the EUDI Wallet.

In administration, the authentication of documents such as birth certificates often still involves manual checks by employees. This procedure is not only time-consuming, but also leads to overloads and long processing times in view of increasing administrative requirements and staff shortages. But the future looks different: In the future, citizens will be able to receive and transmit administrative documents quickly and securely via the EUDI Wallet. This allows the authenticity of documents to be checked automatically. In the long term, this will improve the administration’s ability to act quickly and have a positive impact on trust in administrative services.

EUDI Wallets establish digital credentials as the new standard in administration. They are the key to a future-oriented public administration that is geared towards the needs of citizens, places digitalization at the heart of day-to-day administration and thus fundamentally changes administrative action. The goal is clear: end-to-end digitalized processes, implemented efficiently and without media discontinuity, with maximum security and full control for users.

Eudi-Wallet administration
An ecosystem of companies, public administrations, public supervisory authorities, and an ecosystem orchestrator that manages the participants and their transactions in the ecosystem is being created around the EUDI Wallet. This creates a secure infrastructure for digital credentials in which organizations can register quickly and easily and the security of data and users is guaranteed at all times. It is an important building block of digital sovereignty for Germany and Europe. Organizations and individuals will take on different roles in the future EUDI Wallet ecosystem. They can also perform several roles at the same time, for example as a relying party and credential issuer. More information on the current planning status of the EUDI Wallet ecosystem can be found in the recording of the EGOM working group of 17 March 2025. For more information on how you can become part of the ecosystem and how to get involved in building it, write to us at konsultation-eudi@partner.sprind.org.

The users of the EUDI Wallet are at the center of the ecosystem. They select an EUDI Wallet from the provider they trust in the corresponding app store and choose for themselves which credentials they load into their Wallet: From identity cards to job references and gym membership cards. They have access to their Wallet via code or biometric authentication and only release the data they want to share. If they lose their smartphone, they can block the wallet at any time.

In Germany, there will be a state EUDI Wallet, which is currently being developed by SPRIND as part of the EUDI wallet project commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization (BMDS) and together with project partners. This will ensure that Germany meets its obligations under the amended eIDAS Regulation and that at least one EUDI Wallet is available on the market in good time.

In addition, non-state actors will also have the opportunity to have their own wallet solutions recognized as EUDI Wallets. This opens up the market for innovation and gives citizens real freedom of choice between state and non-state solutions.

In the EUDI Wallet ecosystem, organizations are to be able to register easily and digitally, for example as a relying party or credential issuer. In order to efficiently integrate members into the ecosystem, manage access rights, and meet the supervisory obligations under eIDAS, an ecosystem orchestrator is used to take on these central tasks. The orchestrator will also organize other legal, technical, and commercial aspects.

Relying parties are the organizations that retrieve credentials from users’ wallets, for example to verify their identity or other attributes. Relying parties can therefore be very different types of organizations, from banks to administrations to kiosk owners. Anyone who wants to retrieve information from a wallet is a relying party.

(Q)EAA providers (credential issuers) are organizations that upload credentials to users’ wallets and thus enable them to certify certain attributes. The documents issued can be, for example, an identity card and driving license, but also simple membership cards for the sports club or the enrollment certificate from the university.

With the EUDI Wallet, in the future users will be able to digitally store and use everything that they currently have as a plastic card or in paper form securely, easily and with a minimum of data.

CREATING A NETWORKED FUTURE

The vision of the EUDI Wallet is a secure digital identity for all European citizens – user-centric, interoperable, and trustworthy. In Germany, this ambitious project is being driven forward as part of an architecture and consultation process. Since 2023, civil society, associations, academia, and the private sector have been working together to create a technologically advanced EUDI Wallet ecosystem that brings real added value for citizens, businesses, and public authorities.

DIVERSE AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERTISE

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and State Modernization, SPRIND leads a team with diverse expertise in the areas of digital identities, identity management, regulation, and product design. Together with international experts from the Federal Office for Information Security, Bundesdruckerei, Fraunhofer AISEC, and PwC, a product that meets the highest standards of security, data protection, and user-friendliness is being developed with extensive public participation.

BRINGING THE ECOSYSTEM TO LIFE

The task is clear: to bring a competitive, interoperable, and user-friendly EUDI Wallet ecosystem to life. In an open, transparent dialog with civil society, academia, and the private sector, we are developing a holistic ecosystem alongside a state EUDI Wallet. In addition to the development of innovative operating and financing models, this also includes the definition of requirements that create trust throughout the EU. The iterative development process allows us to integrate public concerns and thus develop the best possible product.

With every step we take, we move closer to a reality in which citizens can access their digital identity in a self-determined and secure way – facilitated by an ecosystem based on transparency and collaboration. Be part of this exciting development and let’s shape the digital future together!

The EUDI Wallet project thrives on diverse contributions! With open consultation hours, the use of platforms such as OpenCoDE, and at trade fairs and conferences, people are invited to share perspectives and knowledge. Whether it’s from civil society, as a researcher, or as a company representative – every opinion is valuable. In consultation formats, topics such as use cases, operating models, and data protection are examined, always with the aim of creating a secure and user-friendly EUDI Wallet and an associated ecosystem for digital credentials.

Expectations and concerns from society are also collected in interviews. You want to be part of a community of interests? You have innovative ideas that you want to share? An invitation to actively help shape the EUDI Wallet is always open. A simple email to konsultation-eudi@partner.sprind.org is all it takes for the project team to get back to you.

Together, a valuable, user-friendly, and secure EUDI Wallet ecosystem can be developed. Let’s rethink things together, make new technology, and improve everyday life with the EUDI Wallet.
